Which Caribbean Passport is the Best?
Since 1984, with the introduction of the St. Kitts and Nevis citizenship-by-investment programme, investors have been able to buy a second passport. Many citizenship-by-investment programmes have perished, but the St. Kitts and Nevis programme has remained strong due to its strict due diligence and solid reputation. Due to the growing popularity of the St. Kitts CBI, other countries in the Caribbean have followed suit and started to offer citizenship-by-investment programmes. Today, 5 sovereign Caribbean nations offer citizenship-by-investment to those who either donate or purchase a property. But which country offers the best passport?
The main feature of a Caribbean passport is that it allows you to stay for 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen are of Europe, visa-free. The Schengen area includes popular tourist destinations like France, Spain, Italy and the UK. Most of the other destinations are very similar, but there are some differences. Let’s explore each of them and see what special destinations each programme offers:
St. Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment
According to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, the Kittitian passport offers visa-free travel to 141 countries. St Kitts and Nevis has the highest number of visa-free destinations of all five Caribbean citizenship programmes and is also the longest-running programme. The nation recently signed a visa waiver agreement with Russia, and both countries citizens can now travel visa-free. It also has, with St. Lucia, the peculiarity of allowing visa-free travel to Taiwan.
Antigua and Barbuda Citizenship-by-Investment
Based on the 2018 Henley Passport Index, the Antiguan passport offers visa-free travel to 140 countries. Its distinguishes itself by being the only one that offers visa-free travel to South Africa for an authorized length of stay of 30 days. Until recently, it was the last nation in the Caribbean with a citizenship-by-investment programme that offered visa-free travel to Canada, but this was terminated over a year ago. It’s also the only one of the five not given visa-free travel by Israel.
St Lucia Citizenship-by-Investment
According to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, the St. Lucian passport offers visa-free travel to 132 countries. It’s the most recent citizenship programme to emerge from the Caribbean. The St. Lucian passport has the benefit of enabling visa-free travel to Taiwan and is the only one with a visa waiver agreement with the UAE, permitting a stay of a maximum of 60 days. The main drawback is that it’s the only programme without a visa waiver agreement with Brazil.
According to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, the Grenadian passport offers visa-free travel to 131 countries. Others might seem to be more powerful, based on the number of visa-free destinations, but the Grenadian passport is viewed by many as the best. It’s the only one that permits visa-free travel to China for 30 days. Grenada has also signed a visa agreement with Russia, just like St Kitts and Nevis has done.
According to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, the Dominican passport offers visa-free travel to 127 countries. It’s the least powerful of all the other passports and doesn’t enable visa-free travel to destinations that the others don’t. It holds the distinction of being the only one not to allow visa-free travel to Chile. The Dominican citizenship-by-investment program was launched in 1990 and is the second-oldest programme, after the St Kitts and Nevis CBI.
